KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 -- The Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) is disappointed with the Asean Para Sports Federation (APSF) for cancelling the Board of Governors (BoG) emergency meeting scheduled for today.
Its president, Datuk Seri Megat D Shahriman Zaharudin, said the move seemed unprofessional as the APSF cancelled the emergency meeting, which was to discuss the direction of the Asean Para Games (APG) 2020, without stating the reasons.
According to a media statement by the PCM, all APSF board members were invited on May 20 to hold a virtual emergency meeting scheduled for this afternoon, but received a cancellation email from APSF at the eleventh hour this morning.
"According to the letter, the decision to cancel the meeting was made following the recommendation of Michael Barredo (chairman of the BoG APSF), who is also president of the Philippines Paralympic Committee (PPC).
"He did so after receiving a letter from the Thailand Paralympic Council stating its intention to organise APG 2020 on the condition that the Games be organised on a minimum scale in December 2020," he said.
Megat D Shahriman claimed that the act seemed to prove that the original host of APG 2020, the Philippines, was immature in deciding to cancel the Para Games on the grounds of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis.
